Advent is the 4 week period leading up to Christmas Day. In the Christian church the beginning of advent is start of the new church year. Advent starts with Advent Sunday which is the first of the four Sundays before Christmas day. During Advent Christians prepare for the celebration of the arrival of the baby Jesus. The word advent comes from the latin word “adventus” meaning arrival.
Like many Christmas traditions the Advent calendar arose in Germany in the late 19th century. They contained 24 windows for children to open each morning during advent and behind each was a pretty picture usually with a biblical theme.
These days many advent calendars contain no religious content and are just seen as a fun way for children to count down to Christmas day.
At Just Christmas we are proud to offer a mix of traditional religious calendars and fun calendars. Children particularly enjoy the calendars with stickers to stick on to complete the picture by Christmas day.
